How to fertilize roses with coffee grounds
How to fertilize roses with coffee grounds

The Sun Sprite Rose has a nice fragrance but you want to keep it healthy by fertilizing it. Roses are heavy feeders so Charlie suggests adding compost in the Spring, really building up the soil, maybe put in some time release fertilizer pellets, then use regular Rose food to keep the Roses really looking good. Another home remedy involves fertilizing with coffee grounds. Coffee grounds sprinkled around Roses about a quarter of an inch to half an inch thick will help Roses grow and bloom better. So after you perk your coffee, save the grounds, dry them out, then sprinkle them around. You'll find your Roses perform better.

How to get rid of mosquitos
How to get rid of mosquitos

Water gardens are great but Mosquitoes like them too. To help control Mosquitoes a safe and effective remedy is Mosquito dunks. When placed in the water they are attractive to Mosquitoes, but they contain a bacteria. The Mosquitoes feed on it, it gets into their gut and kills them. The dunk is safe for pets, for fish that might be in the water, for wildlife and for humans. Just leave the dunks in the water, they will last about 30 days in a pond this size. Normally use 1 in 100 square feet or they could be broken up for use in birdbaths or pottery, anywhere there might be standing water where Mosquitoes will be breeding. It's a safe and effective way to enjoy a water garden without pesky Mosquitoes.

How to cut back ornamental grass
How to cut back ornamental grass

Adrian Higgins is the extraordinary garden writer for the Washington Post and shares with us his tip for cutting back ornamental grass. Spring is late in Washington this year which is good because we haven't gotten around to cutting back our grasses. This is a vital late winter chore because if it isn't done before new growth emerges, cutting could damage the new growth. Different people have different techniques depending on the grass and tool. Adrian doesn't like to use pruners for this task he thinks they're dangerous in this situation. He likes very sharp hedging shears. He gets very low, maybe a couple of inches from the crown and starts cutting with a vengeance. He doesn't worry about being tidy because he can always go back and give it another haircut. With this Panicum he has tied it up so it is already bundled. He cuts away, not worrying about a clean edge because the new growth will come through and hide any imperfections. If one wants they could go back and tidy up but after it's cut it's ready for Spring. Thanks Adrian for your advice. We receive many questions about cutting Ornamental grasses each year, this is helpful advice.

How to make a preventive barrier for slugs and snails
How to make a preventive barrier for slugs and snails

Snails and slugs are a big problem for gardeners across the country, whether it be a hosta patch or your lettuce, they love to eat a wide variety of plants. If you have containers, raised beds, even if you have benches slugs will climb up and over and into your plants. To get rid of these pests you could use baits, traps or a preventative barrier. Copper tape is a protective barrier that works. Copper conducts enough electricity so that when that slimy slug touches the copper strip it gets a little bit of a a shock. Take the tape string it along the base of your raised bed or bench and every time the slug or snail comes in contact with it it will get a shock and go elsewhere. That way you keep them away from your plants and away from you and you don't have to worry about them.
